IDENTIFYING NEW DIGITAL BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES IN THE OIL & GAS INDUSTRY

Combining real-time analytics with connected technologies and solutions on an Internet of Things platform, to create a smart, responsive product and service.

DIGITAL ENERGIZES THE BUSINESS

Analytics-based insights to help the company be more responsive to—or even anticipate—customer needs. New smart digital services, such as predictive maintenance, remote monitoring, and energy optimization help customer operations become more proactive and efficient. At the same time, it strengthens the brand by positioning them as leaders in innovation, technology, and service.

Initial Situation

The price drop in global oil prices has increased the pressure for Oil & Gas companies to find other sources of revenue. The Aftermarket department of this company wanted to explore the possibilities of digital business models.

Approach

After a preliminary research on the current industry trends, a report was presented to a selected group of participants a few weeks in advance to read. Followed by a presentation which also introduced part of the methodology to be used in the workshop and a small exercise to take home.

A two-day workshop was conducted to identify possible digital business models within the current customer base and the current situation of the company. The purpose was to find solutions using only resources currently available in the company, without focusing on technology, but rather on people. After crafting a customer journey, we entered into a guided ideation session. The initial ideas were kept to be validated with lean methods.

RESULT

An idea for a hardware-software remote monitoring solution was developed over the course of a few months. First, lean validating and creating a business case that would justify the costs for the initial development.

The client response was positive enough to sign a contract buying the service before the solution was developed. Direct customer feedback was also key for the development of features in the application.
